Thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of your thyroid gland. Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. It produces hormones that control every aspect of your metabolism, from your heart rate to how quickly you burn calories.

Thyroidectomy can be used to treat thyroid diseases such as cancer, non-cancerous thyroid enlargement (goiter) and hyperthyroidism (hyperthyroidism).
How much of the thyroid gland to load depends on the type of complication. If only part of the thyroid is loaded (partial thyroidectomy), the thyroid is able to resume normal activity after surgery. However, if the entire thyroid gland is loaded (total thyroidectomy), the patient needs daily treatment with thyroid hormones to reward normal thyroid function.

Thyroidectomy may be recommended in the following cases:

Thyroid cancer:

Cancer is the most common cause of thyroidectomy.If the patient has cancer; If the entire thyroid is not removed (total thyroidectomy is not performed), most of the thyroid will be removed.

Non-cancerous enlargement of the thyroid (goiter): When an enlarged thyroid causes discomfort or difficulty breathing or swallowing, or in some cases leads to hyperthyroidism or hyperthyroidism; In this case, all or part of the thyroid needs to be removed.

Hyperthyroidism (hyperthyroidism): Hyperthyroidism is a complication in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. If the patient is allergic to antithyroid drugs and does not accept radioactive iodine treatment; Thyroidectomy may be the only treatment left.
